Privacy Policy
The Writing Project (“we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the Noterva browser extension (the “Extension”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use Noterva.
By installing and using the Noterva extension, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
1. Information We Collect
To provide our citation management and cloud-syncing services, the Extension collects the following types of information:
A. Personally Identifiable Information
When you activate the Extension or log into the Cloud Sync feature, we collect your email address. This is used exclusively to verify your active license and authenticate your account on our secure servers.
B. Authentication Information
To securely sync your library across devices, you must create a password. We collect and securely transmit your password to our servers. We do not store your password in plain text; it is securely hashed.
C. Website Content
The core functionality of Noterva is to extract bibliographic metadata (such as titles, authors, DOIs, and PDF links) from academic publisher websites and Google Scholar.
- The Extension only reads the content of a web page when you explicitly click the extension icon or interact with the Noterva interface on that specific tab.
- We do not track your general web browsing history, monitor your keystrokes, or collect data from tabs where the extension is not actively invoked.
D. User-Generated Content (Your Library)
If you enable Cloud Sync, the citation metadata and library structure you build within Noterva (your saved papers, tags, and collections) are transmitted to and stored on our servers so you can access them seamlessly across multiple devices.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- Authentication: To verify your license and grant you access to premium features.
- Service Provision: To sync your citation library across your devices.
- Functionality: To extract metadata from publisher pages to format your citations correctly.
- Customer Support: To assist you with account-related inquiries or technical issues.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information or browsing data to any third parties.
3. Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored securely on our servers hosted by The Writing Project. We implement industry-standard security measures, including HTTPS/SSL encryption during data transmission, to protect your personal information and citation library from unauthorized access, alteration, or destruction.
4. Third-Party Services
Noterva interacts with public academic APIs (such as Crossref and Unpaywall) to retrieve metadata for DOIs. During this process, the Extension may send the DOI or article title to these services. No personally identifiable information or authentication data is ever shared with these third-party APIs.
If you choose to configure an Institutional Proxy (EZProxy) within the Extension, your requests to fetch PDFs will be routed through your university’s proxy server. We do not monitor, log, or store the traffic passing through your institutional proxy.
5. Your Data Rights
You have the right to:
- Access the citation data stored in your Cloud Sync account.
- Update your email address or password.
- Request Deletion of your account and all associated cloud-synced library data.
To exercise these rights, please contact us using the information below.
6. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by updating the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
